San Francisco Youth Circus' New Production "Impressions"

Napa, CA – Circus stars of tomorrow from the San Francisco Youth Circus present a new production, “Impressions,” at the Napa Valley Opera House. The performance takes the audience on one child’s journey through a museum where the artwork jumps, spins and catapults to life. “Impressions” combines acrobatics, clowning, dance and a multi-media backdrop to portray some of the world's most famous art in a whole new form. Three performances take place Friday, July 13 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, July 14 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for children.

Circus Workshops
Prior to their Napa performance, (July 11-13) San Francisco Circus will offer three days of workshops in juggling, acrobatics, clowning and other circus skills, culminating in a mini-performance. For information and fees, call the Opera House Box Office at 707-226-7372.

The San Francisco School of Circus Arts was founded by Wendy Parkman and Judy Finelli as a project of the Pickle Family Circus in 1984. Sixteen children made up the first class rosters and the students trained at the Pickle's headquarters in an old church on San Francisco's Potrero Hill.
In 1990 Judy Finelli hired master trainer Lu Yi, former star performer and artistic director of the Nanjing Acrobatic Troupe, to head the school and to develop the most comprehensive Chinese acrobatics program outside of China. That goal was soon met with the arrival of two of Lu Yi's protégé’s from Nanjing.

The school became a separate non-profit corporation in 1993 and moved into a vacant high school gymnasium in the Haight Ashbury district. To give his students performing opportunities, Lu Yi established the San Francisco Circus in 1996. The following December the school staged its first student production, Zoppo!, a show that played to a sold-out house at the Cowell Theater at Fort Mason. Subsequent shows were produced each of the following two years at Theater Artaud, with similar success.
