Pat Metheny With The Brad Mehldau Trio Perform March 27

Napa, CA – The Napa Valley Opera House presents Pat Metheny with The Brad Mehldau Trio on Tuesday, March 27 at 8 p.m. This is a dream pairing — Pat Metheny, the Baby Boomer guitar god whose musical palette embraces everything from Ornette Coleman to contemporary jazz, teams with pianist Brad Mehldau, the brooding Gen X prince of the piano. The duo will be joined by Mehldau’s trio members Larry Grenadier on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums. Tickets are $55.

For Brad Mehldau, this collaboration started at that "life-changing moment" when, as a 13-year-old, a friend played him "Are You Going With Me" from the Pat Methany Group's 1982 live double-album, “Travels.” Years later, Pat Methany heard "Chill" from saxophonist Joshua Redman's 1994 album “Moodswing” that featured Brad Mehldau on piano. Since, the two artists have forged an artistic partnership based on shared inspiration, not just mutual admiration. Their first album, “Metheny Mehldau,” features music by both musicians, and was recorded at Right Track Studio (NYC) in December of 2005.

The second collaboration between guitarist Metheny and pianist Mehldau—“Quartet”—was released on March 13, 2007 on the Nonesuch Records label. The record features seven tracks written by Metheny, three by Mehldau, and one jointly written tune. Mehldau’s bandmates, Ballard and Grenadier, play on seven of the songs, while the remaining three are duets. The four musicians will perform at the Napa Valley Opera House during their 27-city North American tour—which also includes stops in Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Washington and New York.
