Just Added! Queen Latifah Performs Jazz, Blues And R & B

Napa, CA – Grammy Award winner Queen Latifah performs jazz standards, blues, pop and R & B at the Napa Valley Opera House on Thursday, July 12 at 8 p.m. During her performance, one of only three West Coast appearances this summer, Latifah will sing tracks from her latest CD,The Dana Owens Album. Following up her role in “Chicago,”The Dana Owens Album features one of hip-hop's founding females performing jazz and pop standards, including a smoldering version of Al Green's Simply Beautiful. Tickets are $93 and $98.

Queen Latifah, hip-hop's first lady and the woman behind the moniker, is Dana Owens, born March 18, 1970, in East Orange, New Jersey. She came from a police family- -both her father and older brother were officers, which would later influence her rhyming style and life philosophy. Owens witnessed both sides of black urban life in the U.S. while growing up. After a brief stint as a Burger King employee, she soon found herself making waves in the hip-hop music scene.
During the late 1980s, Queen Latifah emerged as one of the most significant artists to enter the scene of rap recording, and earned a reputation as one of the most vital female artists of the following decade. In a recording media characterized by the belligerence of the gangster culture, Queen Latifah established herself as a pillar of female strength and developed a reputation as a role model for her generation.

After working as the human beat box alongside the rap group Ladies Fresh, she was just 18-years-old when she originally broke through in the late 1980s with a style that picked selectively from jazz, reggae, and soul traditions, from beats produced by 'D.J. Mark the 45 King.' Her debut single,Wrath of My Madness, was released in 1988. A year later, her first album,All Hail the Queen, enjoyed favored reviews, “...an old, wise head was evident on the top of her young shoulders.”

All Hail the Queen managed to be both a critical and commercial success and was followed by the albums Nature of a Sista and Black Reign, which contained the hit single, U.N.I.T.Y., for which she won a Grammy. Her fourth hip-hop album,Order in the Court was released in 1998, followed by the The Dana Owens Album release in 2004.

Well-known as Mama in “Chicago,” Queen Latifah has appeared in numerous movies and has starred in movie remakes of “Taxi,” “Last Holiday” and “Hairspray.” Currently, she is filming “The Perfect Christmas.”
