Brazilian Singer-Songwriter CéU Performs
Napa, CA – Just when you think that Brazil must surely have exhausted its supply of irresistibly jazzy, funky, sexy, soulful electro-pop singer-songwriters, someone like CéU comes along and makes you think that maybe that particular well is bottomless after all. Nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2006 for Best New Artist, CéU performs at the Napa Valley Opera House on Friday, November 2 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $35 and $30.
CéU’s (pronounced “Sayou”) music has been described as soul, afrobeat and electrojazz, but her roots are in Samba and her music expresses the modern urban São Paulo take on the Samba beat. The 27-year-old Brazilian singer-songwriter experienced a remarkable debut with her April 3, 2007 self-titled release. The CD mixes a bit of Bebel Gilberto with Billie Holiday, along with Lauryn Hill and Ella Fitzgerald.
In just two months she sold 60,000 albums and scored unprecedented chart numbers for a Brazilian female artist, reaching number one on Billboard’s World Music charts (cracking the nearly two-year domination of Celtic women) and number one on Billboard's Heatseekers (New Artist) Chart.
At the Opera House, CéU will perform with her five-piece band, consisting of young, fresh musicians from varying musical backgrounds. She selected a group of artists whose average age is just twenty-five, however their age is no reflection on the enormous combined talent of the group, whose charisma, energy and musical maturity is a perfect fit with CéUs exposition of Malemolência (everything she loves about Brazil).
